The ICSB2008 main programme will take place at the Göteborg Convention Centre. The main programme starts in the afternoon of Aug 23 and ends at noon Aug 27.

Tutorials will take place on Aug 22, 23 at Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology.

Workshops will be running during the afternoon of Aug 27 as well as on Aug 28 at the Wallenberg Conference Centre, Medicinaberget, University of Gothenburg.

The setup of ICSB2008 differs in a number of ways from that of previous conferences to reflect the rapid development of the field.

We plan a total of seven plenary sessions with four invited speakers each, covering following broad topics.

Plenary

1. Network biology
2. Understanding and curing diseases
3. Cell regulation
4. From cell to organ to organism to population
5. New approaches to biotechnology
6. Genetic variation and evolution
7. Future challenges

In addition, the opening session will feature two key-note lectures and presentations of significant initiatives.

We plan a total of twelve parallel sessions that will come in blocks of four (i.e. the four in one block run in parallel).

Dedicated session

Block 1: Cell regulation – metabolism
Standards and repositories
Drug discovery
Plant systems
?
Block 2: Cell regulation – signalling
Modelling approaches
Diagnostic markers for complex diseases
Microbial systems
?
Block 3: Cell-to-cell variation
Synthetic biology
Software tools
Model-driven experiment planning
?

Each dedicated session features 20-min introductory lectures by two invited convenors, plus six shorter presentations selected from submitted abstracts. This will give in total up to 72 young scientists an opportunity to speak at the conference.

We plan two underlying themes: “clinical and medical systems biology? (Aug 23-24), “new approaches to biotechnology, bioengineering and environmental sciences? (Aug 26-27). Relevant sessions as well as activities during the lunch breaks will be part of the themes.

Further planned activities:

“Arenas?
Information booths to inform on larger projects, new centres, initiatives and non-commercial research tools of wider interest.

“Speakers corners?
Allocated places and times where delegates have an opportunity to meet and discuss with invited speakers.

Lunch-break sessions

"Needs of industry",“Funding? and “Education?
These are three 90min sessions with short presentations and discussions on the needs of indurty to develop systems biology, funding needs, mechanisms and opportunities as well as interdisciplinary training and education.

“Tutorials? and “Workshops?
These are traditional ICSB activities that have expanded quite a lot in recent years. The tutorials and workshops will take place on the premises of the local universities, easily accessible from the conference centre (one to three tram stops). Tutorials and Workshops will be organised separately (not by the ICSB!) where ICSB will provide the infrastructure for the respective organisers.

Except for the Tutorials, Workshops and Conference Dinner, all conference activities will take place under same roof at the Göteborg Convention Centre. Most hotels, as well as the city centre, are within a few hundred meters from the venue. There is a large hotel in the conference centre. The venue is a 20min bus ride from the airport.
